SB,

Re Nix - I'm not too excited about any Pitt player in this draft class - Nix included... Yesterday he posted a DNP in the bench...hmmm love to know why....  being from Pitt - Nix wont count as one of the visits once that starts..  I view this more of courtesy vs interest  At least I hope.

2009 Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper Sucks Thread

February 25, 2012 5:56 am

Here are some of Walter's Football anaylsis on the bench yesterday...

Ohio State tackle Mike Adams (6-7, 323) had a lower than expected bench press total with only 19 reps. Adams does have longer arms (34), but that low total is a red flag. At Ohio State, Adams was a tough run blocker, and his bench press total could cause some teams to go back and re-evaluate his functional strength.

The top-rated center in the 2012 NFL Draft, Wisconsin's Peter Konz had a one of the most disappointing bench press totals. He managed only 18 reps, and that was very surprising considering he is a powerful interior lineman. This is a red flag on Konz's first-round grade, but he has a lot of good tape to offset the Combine bench press.

Wisconsin guard Kevin Zeitler pushed up 32 reps of 225 pounds. Zeitler is a powerful run blocker, so his strength in the bench press is not surprising. After a mixed outing at the Senior Bowl, he needed a good showing to get his combine started. He has a lot of good tape that shows his power.

TE:

  • Georgia tight end Orson Charles (6-2, 251) gained 10 pounds from his listed weight in college, and apparently that weight was all muscle. Charles destroyed all the other tight ends with 35 reps on the bench press. It was a very impressive total as he outproduced some of the top power run-blocking offensive linemen at the Combine. Charles did better than Stanford's David DeCastro, Georgia's Cordy Glenn, Iowa State's Kelechi Osemele, and Wisconsin's Kevin Zeitler and Peter Konz. If Charles runs well in the 40 and the shuttle drills, he will be one of the stars of the Combine.

  • Clemson tight end Dwayne Allen (6-3, 255) is thickly built. He tied for the second-highest total on the bench press with 27. It was a good total for Allen, who is a well-rounded tight end that combines blocking ability with dangerous receiving skills.

  • Stanford tight end Coby Fleener (6-6, 247) won't run at the Combine because of an ankle injury, but he showed good strength by tying Allen for the second-highest total on the bench press with 27. Fleener has power to go along with a good receiving skill set.

Stock up:  Glenn, Osemele, Zeitler, Charles, Allen

Stock Down: Konz, McCants, Adams.

Yeah only the bench, but when you need a hand punch and you can't fight your way out of a shopping bag, that's a HUGE ?

2K,  That is actually an inside joke between myself, bb, and truth. Every draft they ignore the OL, we were going to drive to the SOuth side of Pittsburgh, picking everyone up in a Caddilac El Dorado. We get liquored up and storm Colbert's office, with tar and feathers.

NFL network is starting to go to the dark side, the ESPN zone if you will. They shove Luck and Griffen so far up your ass, you'll need a surgical teams of proctologists with an Ettore 49036 reach and grab.

it's all about the ad revenue, without tv ratings there would be no NFL. Everyone sold out, now NFL network is joining the toilet of greed. They think by running the most popular story of the combine over and over again until your eyes and ears bleed. THe goal is to get the most viewers for thier share rating, which is a cost basis for charging for ad space by the minute.

And the topper..
These 2 chickenpoops aren't even throwing... same for Oscar Meyer Weiner (QB from Zona St) and now Tannehill..

How about spending some time talking about the long shot kids?  How about talking about the kids the AREN'T there in Indy... there are so many other stories besides Luck and RG3...  but as you stated we'll hear all about them and then some just like Cam Newton last year and Teblow before that...

just got back from taking the Lab to the local pond - crazy dog.. will go in and out of the water all day long retrieving a tennis ball.. But if its raining in the morning when we get up...  tough to get her to go out side..  go figure...

sb, DGB is a pipe dream. i know, just wishful thinking. He will be a top 5 pick, by the time he comes out he'll be running sub 4.4's. that is a special player with that height weight and speed.

Heh :p i recall, i remember talks of a caddy when we passed on Dan Williams, i was ready to fly out and be picked up :P

It is a pity, but the thing i do like about the nfl network is that, while there is an ever increasing amount of fluff, mayock loves the draft and you can see it when he speaks, he lives for this crap and i love watching that. He shines on day 3. Its nice to know that there are actual experts out there with a good platform to be heard even if i disagree with him, he deserves to get the praise he does, i also think Charles is solid over all too. i like their team and as long as that is intact, the nfl network will be just fine i think- a little tedious at times but fine overall.

do you remember when mayock lost his voice in 2010 i think? it visibly crushed him, i felt for the man.

5 mins.

Glenn is looking good, i said he looked good in drills and he continues to impress, the other georgia boy was not bad either, i really should stop reffering to ppl by number and not name, but its hard to match them all up in events like the sbowl and combine. a few tackles i want to see also. i love the DB drills, the line drills are meh, the Rb drills are not bad, the gauntlet drill i think is good in some aspects and terrible in others- oh and pass rush drills, i can not wait for that. i read a piece about the 40 times being way inaccurate over on walter, which was interesting, I HATE the idea of the combine 40 time turning in to fricking races, this is not a track event damn it.

Well any shot the Ravens possibly had at glenn just went out of the window, but i think konz may drop a bit because people put far too much stock in these drills, which is good.

how not to run a drill- cullen- literally standing up and moving around.

this datko kid is undersized something intrigues me need to watch more.

holy god decastro looks smooth, actually bends and moved well. this is not a bad drill at all, you can tell the natural waist benders.

thus far castro looks way better than anyone else i have seen, he will anchor well, and his feet were smooth.

ok glenn didnt have the best drill from a direction point ( but who cares really?) but jesus he bends and he is a load, the kid looks like a walking wardrobe.

reshawn will get picked up and driven back in the nfl- no thank you.

I should clarify, i meant too much stock in the 40 and bench press drills.  (for most positions are silly and dont mean much imo)

position drills are solid overall.

2K,

A little perspective here..  DeCastr0 SHOULD look great - he is top 15 pick in this draft class - Rishaw Johnson is a 6th round pick if that - a developmental kid who I dont expect to look "polished" at this point..  Kid will need work - weight room, Technique, foot movement - but he has potential - Kid is not going to start - DeCastro will right out of the box..    I'm more worrid about the mental side of Rishaw than his atheletic ability.

So far what I've seen from the 1st OL group - DeCastro is clearly the best one (as advertised)

Glenn looks good, other guys I like are Allen, Jones and Blake.

I felt bad for I think it was R. Johnson during the drill that starts with the OL on their back, he looked so bad in that.

They undervalue glenn i feel, he is a lock for the first round like this, he is just powerful, he would honestly thrive in the North.

as for decastro, i dont feel the gap is that large between him and glenn, he did look nice but hardly anyone impressed on that last drill, they didnt pull well for me and they all drove far to high on the chest, even decastro looked poor pulling for me, he stepped back just to make sure the drill was not interupted, he does that in the nfl and he will say hi to ngata behind the LoS.

these drills are insightful though so im glad i didnt pass on the O line drills.

as for glenn, i didnt think we could get him at the end of the first but im now sure we wont. I still think konz may fall.
