INDIANAPOLIS - Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon won't run the 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine after injuring his hamstring last week. He might participate in some short routes during receiver drills, but won't do anything this week that requires "opening up" and threaten his ability to perform at the Cowboys' March 7 Pro Day.

Blackmon, NFLDraftScout.com's top-rated wide receiver and No. 5 prospect overall, also measured in a hair under 6-1, shorter than his previously listed size.

"I know you get shorter every year," he quipped.

It also makes previous comparisons to Detroit's Calvin Johnson difficult.

"He's a big, physical guy and that's how I like to play," Blackmon said when asked about similarities between the two.

In addition to his smaller than advertised size, Blackmon still has to answer questions about his straight-line speed. He said with a laugh that he'd "like to run a 4.2" in the 40-yard dash, but said he expects to run in the 4.4 or 4.5 range.

"I tell (people) to look at the tape, I've never been caught from behind," Blackmon said.

Blackmon also admitted he has some work to do on his route-running.

"I know I have a lot to work on with route running," said Blackmon. "I am working on it continually. I know I have work to do and I'm willing to do it."

As confident as he plays on the field, Blackmon described himself as quietly confident off it.

Asked to explain, he dead-panned: "I don't speak much."

WR Blackmon won't run 40 at Combine

The best comment was Friday morning when Coach Billick said something to the effect of "he's close to Julio Jones".  Right...6'3" 220 <4.4s beast vs. 6'0" 215 pretty boy who won't perform.

WR Blackmon won't run 40 at Combine

I think he will still go from 6-8 but they gotta fix the combine so it's not optional for the top end talent. Makes the whole process less of an event, showing off at a pro day in Stillwater does a fraction of what the combine would have done.

good luck Chargers fan he isnt top 10 worthy.  1 in 100 receivers are and Calvin Johnson is already on a team, id say you should have a good chance. He shouldnt go top ten to me.

WR Blackmon won't run 40 at Combine

I hope so.  Keep falling Blackmon and hopefully to the teens and to the Chargers.  Idiot GM's will pass on him because he didn't run the 40 and they don't go off of tape.  This dude is a beast and some team will be super lucky if he drops out of the top 5 - hopefully it is San Diego.  We need it.

Blackmon is only 6ft? Man he looks taller than that. 6ft and 215lbs sounds more like a RB than a receiver.

Roethlisberger needs to sit down and shut up

Ben is believing too much of the hype that he's an elite QB. Ben, you need to count your blessings for being selected to a great organization. You have been protected by the talent pool the Steelers have assembled throughout the years. Todd Haley will get in the face of Big Ben and make him accountable for his undiscipline ways. Bruce Arians was useless when it came to harnessing Ben's careless mistakes. Todd will make Ben hit the film room and cut down on those senseless mistakes. Ben is undiscipline and ill-prepared as a QB, but he hides it with his scrabbling. Ben will learn how to read defenses, understand down and distance and saving field position at key times in the game. This will be the Steelers best off-season move of 2012. Mike Tomlin refused to criticize Ben for his poor decision makings in games, so he brings someone in who doesn't have a relationship with Ben to crack the whip. Ben, sit down and shut up.

A WR that is looking to let his play do the talking sounds great to me.  Maybe this guy isn't perfect in every way that can be poked or prodded, but when Justin Blackmon plays he plays huge.  He's going to be a great NFL talent.

Shorter than advertised and now this...He's making it hard to justify a top 5 pick.
