Campbell, draft make OAK a surprise contender

Posted on: April 24, 2010 1:37 pm

I noted in an earlier blog posting that the Oakland Raiders were quietly enjoying a very solid draft. Any Al Davis team is certain to have explosive playmakers and the Raiders certainly have that. They've made moves to improve a woeful run defense with their first two picks of inside linebacker Rolando McClain and defensive tackle Lamarr Houston.

The Raiders also addressed their need for an offensive tackle with two extremely talented middle round prospects in Jared Veldheer and Bruce Campbell. While neither may be able to contribute as a starter immediately, both could ultimately develop into quality starters.

The biggest move, of course, was the addition of quarterback Jason Campbell.

Campbell has the big arm necessary to take advantage of Darrius Heyward-Bey's big play ability. He's used to attacking defenses down the seam through the tight end with Chris Cooley and inherits a young tight end in Zach Miller, who has quietly become of the AFC's best at the position.

Considering the that the Broncos are unlikely to get immediate help from their top draft picks, Demaryius Thomas and Tim Tebow and the Kansas City Chiefs are still a year or more away from truly competing, Oakland could emerging as San Diego's primary competition in the AFC West.

Campbell, draft make OAK a surprise contender

I don't know if I would call the Raiders contenders after the draft, but no team improved itself (on paper) relative to it's roster more than the Raiders this year.

Regarding McClain over Morrison, Raiders fans have watched game after game in agony as Morrison would rack up tackles five or ten yards beyond the line of scrimmage.  Another poster said it very well, he's an outside linebacker hopelessly overmatched in the middle.

Regarding Campbell, the argument that he makes the contenders is based on what happened with the Raiders when JaFlabbus Bustell wasn't on the field.  Gradkowski, a journeyman in the NFL, showed the team could win games against some really good teams if it had something better than the worst starting quarterback in the NFL.  Campbell is not only an immense upgrade over Russell, he's likely a significant upgrade over Gradkowski.  Furthermore, his strength has always supposedly been his deep ball, which was underutilized in Washington, so Oakland certainly seems to fit him better.  System counts for something.

Also, taking talented offensive tackles in the third and fourth round makes much sense for the Raiders, who have a former offensive line coach as their head coach. By taking project tackles later in the draft, the Raiders are taking advantage of one of their coaching strengths.

The Raiders won five games last year, and it seems that because of the moves they made, perhaps even just the acquisition of Campbell alone, that they are atleast three games better--which puts them at 8-8 and in the hunt in the AFC West.  They aren't anywhere close to San Diego yet, but they might actually have a shot at a wildcard spot.

All Raider fans loved Morrison...but if you really watched him play, he was a liability againts the run.  Yes he led the team in tackels...but I would say 75% of those tackles were after big gains by a running back...luckily he was fast enough to run them down before they broke totally free.  He wasnt powerful or stout enough to get up in the middle and close those holes.  He was much batter as a coverage LB...but his INT and pass deflections have dropped over the last two years.  Morrison is a good LB...but he's better on the outside and in coverage...he was not  the run stopping MLB the Raiders needed behind that DLine.  He will continue to have success in Jax...but McClain will be a much better MLB in Oak than Morrison was able to be.  He's not as quick or as solid in coverage...but he plays smart, he can captain the Defense and he will be a huge improvement in stopping the run.  He'll be at the same level of tackels that Morrison was each year...with more sacks and more takcles for loss...he wll be a difference maker on Defence...not just a solid player   With that being said though...i will miss Morrison in the Silver and Black...and I guess I'll need to replace my Morrison jersey with a McCalin!

Is resorting to bigoted remarks about a person's  personal beliefs the best you can bring?   Its also intellectually dishonest... look it up, you will find it under "i".   Why not go down to the stadium and call Tim out or are you just as cowardly physically as you are intellectually?

Because the Raiders had a pretty solid D last year and Gradkowski won 4 games or something.
Campbell is at least 3 games better than Gradkowski.

There is an infinite amount of space of how much better he is than Russell.

I think just the fact they got him says the Raiders are not longer interested in playing the part of the wild child bad boy club.  They want to win games.  They are willing to admit mistakes and move forward even if it means wasting 30 million dollars.  That will make the players care and will mean more than just having a competent NFL QB.

Also, Campbell is way underrated as an NFL QB.  He is athletic, smart and has a good arm.  He was put in some pretty unfair situations because of bad coaching and ownership.  I think with a team that decides on him as a starter and lets him play one offense for back-to-back seasons he can be a dependable if not great QB

um, comparing moss and bey is an obvious mismatch, but the Raiders have a few more targets than that. JR couldn't hit any of them. as a chefs fan, you should be happy with your draft as well, but the chefs and the Raiders trade games every year. Neither team is very good. The Raiders are much better without JR. The entire team plays better whehn he is out. Zach  Miller is more talented than cooley, and louis murphy and chad schillens are underrated. The best player on the redskins is portis and the skins have ran him to death. The Raiders are not ready to contend for the division, but they are closer. The longer Norval is in SD - the worse they get. What the Raiders desperately need is a difference maker at DT, and I do not think we will get one anytime soon. I do not think that the 3-4 will settle the run defense either. The Raiders still have a long way to go, but they are closer if JR never sees the field. Does anyone remember just how awful he looks every offensive possession ? overweight, overpayed, unmotivated, and he makes everyone around him worse. Campbell has got to be a step up from that. btw, the skins were poor on D last year as well.

Personally, don;t think Campbell as great as the article here writes HOEVER< being a memebr of The Nation, any QB beyond Russell is a step in the right direction. Great draft, solid addition, weakeing AFC West, NFC West and scaled schedule???  - Raiders absolutely have a chance to take the AFC West.
