Rams, Bucs, Browns confused by team needs?

Posted on: April 23, 2010 6:47 pm

Some teams subscribe to the "best player available" theory, with the Rams, Bucs and Browns clearly being among them.

Consider that the Rams, who invested the No. 2 overall pick in Jason Smith last year and only a few years back invested a first round pick in another offensive tackle, Alex Barron, made Rodger Saffold, a career tackle, the first pick of the second round. Saffold will most likely be moved inside to guard.

As talented as Saffold is, he doesn't fill the need for a defensive tackle the Rams now have considering they traded away former starter Adam Carriker.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, the Tampa Bay Bucs, who had a need at offensive tackle, instead elected to again fortify their defensive line, taking Brian Price from UCLA. His burst inside made him a natural candidate as a 3-technique, the same position the Bucs had filled previously with first round pick, Gerald McCoy.

The Browns made a similar move, electing to look past concerns at pass rusher and quarterback to take another defensive back -- the 10th among the first 38 selections. Pairing the big-hitting TJ Ward with first round pick Joe Haden and recently acquired DB Sheldon Brown gives the Browns an impressive new secondary to compete with the underrated passing attacks of the AFC North.

Rams, Bucs, Browns confused by team needs?

WTF are you smoking RANG?

Yeah they got that guy from Texas last year  (Tampa that is)...but their D line sucks...teams just pounded the rock with impunity and ha little fear from a push up front...

I think TB did pretty good nabbing Mccoy and Price...especially considering some people had Price going in the 1st round

Im not sold on Arrelious Benn, and trading up to get him when Kindle was still on the board...but with the departure of Antonio Bryant they desperately needed a playmaker on the outside.

I think Tampa has drafted to fill their needs...

I am excited that they with who they got so far in this draft......

I like the fact the Rams got some OL help. Smart move. When you have Bradford and the money he gets , you have to suround him with great protection and time to through. The Rams are decent at wr so I am cool with the OL pick.

The Browns could have easily grabbed Safety Ward with any
one of their 3rd round picks.  He might have even been there in
the 5th round.  I believe he was a big reach with the 6th pick
in the 2nd round.  Then, they moved up in the 2nd round
to grab Hardesty, who I also believe would have been there
for them in the 3rd round.  Both players have lenghty injury
histories, and both were reaches in my opinion.
I have not been very impressed with the Browns moves thus far.
I am very dissappointed at this point.   If Coly McCoy is there in
round 3,I believe the Brow2ns should go ahead and draft him.
I hate seeing the Ravens, Steelers, and Bengals grabbing
players that I wanted the Browns to pick.  Very frustrating.

You got that right.  Seeing how Boldin is now in the AFC North secondary help was a must.  Cleveland defensive backfield was horrilble.  Build the pass rush up with the later picks.

Well stated, Leige. Obviously, Rob Rang didn't see the burnt toast opposing qb's were feasting on everytime the Browns pass defense was on the field last season. With or without Haden, I'd qualify the pick as addressing a huge need.

I couldn't agree with you any more. Obviously, Rob Rang didn't see the burnt toast opposing qb's were feeding off of everytime the Browns lined up on passing downs. I would say getting a safety was a huge need.

The Browns Secondary was a "Massive" hole... literally!!!
I think that was a great move and I was getting close to giving up any hope for the Browns after very 'suspect' moves the last few years.
Finally, an area of the team I can hang my hat on.
